Clay fabrics are thin geocomposite materials containing natural bentonite clay powder and one or more layers of geosynthetics.
\nThey are manufactured using needled non-woven and woven geotextiles which are the load-bearing part of the material.<\/p>\n
Powder is applied between the layers of fabric and the fabric is tied together either by seams or by needlework.
\nThe task of geotextiles in the produced material is to fix the clay particles to each other and to strengthen the weak clay layer.
\nUpon contact with water, the clay particles bind to the water molecules and swell up to ten times and stick together to form a water-impermeable layer.<\/p>\n
Geosynthetic clay interlayers are used in places where liquids and gases must not seep into the surrounding environment.
\nOne such site is a landfill, where a thick layer of compacted blue clay can be replaced by a geosynthetic clay interlayer.<\/p>\n
